Obituary

FAYE JONES STEPHENS, 95, of Kenova, W.Va., passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.  She was born March 3, 1930, at East Lynn, W.Va., a daughter of the late Charley and Lillie Davis Jones.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Claude Argean Stephens; a son Larry David Stephens; two brothers, Clyde (Frances) Jones, and Jesse (Phyllis) Jones; three sisters, Ada (James) Wilkes, Edith (Lyle) Plymale, and Ernestine (Arno) Pratt.

Faye is survived by her loving children: two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri Lynn (Demetrius) Apostolon, of Kenova, and Donna Faye (Jeff) Drown of Huntington, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Tanner (Jordan) Drown, John Apostolon, Zachary Apostolon, and Madison Apostolon.

Mrs. Stephens grew up on the Right Fork of Beech Fork in Wayne County and was taught at home by her mother, who was a teacher, until the age of six when she entered the fifth grade at a one-room school at Mills Chapel Grade School.  Faye then went to Wayne High School where she graduated in 1946.  After high school she entered Marshall College where she majored in English and Business Administration and began teaching in Wayne County at the age of 19.  She worked for 38 years at schools in West Virginia, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois.

After retiring from Wayne High School as a counselor, Mrs. Stephens was hired at Ashland Community College where she enjoyed working for the next five years.  She maintained a residential rental business for over 30 years in Wayne and Cabell Counties.

Mrs. Stephens always believed that a person could achieve anything he or she desired if that person was willing to work hard enough to get an education.  Her education included a master's degree plus 37 additional hours in secondary education.

In addition to her family, Mrs. Stephens is survived by three brothers-in-law, Paul (Edith) Stephens, Silas (Dorothy) Stephens, and Dallas (Connie) Stephens; one sister-in-law, Helen (Paul) Weber; her Buffalo Valley Missionary Church family whose compassion and love will always be remembered; as well as thousands of students too numerous to mention.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Queen officiating.  Burial will follow in the Stephens Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at noon.
