Obituary

SANDRA LOUISE JOHNSON HAND, 84, of Huntington, W.Va., passed Friday, July 3, 2026, in the comforts of her home with her children. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Reva Arlene Johnson; parents-in-law Melvin and Josephine Hand; her beloved husband Leonard Hand; brother-in-law Billy (Sheryl) Hand; sister-in-law Shirley Johnson; special “uncle” Irving Hand; and many dear aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her son Arthur Hand of Huntington; daughter Katie (Bobby) McCallister of Scott Depot, W.Va.; grandson Josh McCallister of Louisville, Ky.; brothers Robert Earl (Ann) Johnson, and Dewey Johnson (Mildred Lewis) of Huntington; sister Delores (Roland) Esque of Barboursville, W.Va.; sister in-law Camille Hand (Charlie) Watts of Purcellville, Va.; aunts Rachel Harbour of Russell, Ky., and Judy Loudermilk of Virginia Beach, Va.; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins; along with her cat Cali, which will live with her son Arthur.

Sandy spent her childhood in Salt Rock, W.Va., before moving to Huntington, where she became a member of Baptist Temple and graduated from Huntington East High School, Class of 1959. She started her first job at McCrory’s downtown Huntington and attended Marshall College. She learned quickly that school wasn’t for her and had her sights on the Airlines. She moved to Virginia and worked for Allegany Airlines as a ticket agent and then transferred to Piedmont Airlines, where she met Lenny. They were married in 1967, lived in Virginia and soon had Art. They moved briefly to Kentucky, where Katie was born, and then to Cincinnati where Sandy was employed by the Cincinnati Reds. Finally, they made their way back to Huntington in 1976 where Sandy worked for the School of Nursing, and the Autism Training Center at Marshall University. Around 1989 she decided to venture out and start her own business, Flowers Fifth Avenue, which she owned and operated for 12 years while also managing the business office for The Huntington Cubs, until she felt she needed to spend more time with her husband and parents to care for them until their passings.

Sandy then went full force in creating the Pathway to the Cross, an interactive walkthrough exhibit chronicling Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and pivotal events leading to his resurrection that started at Baptist Temple and was featured at multiple churches throughout the area including its final display at Heritage Farm Museum and Village. She authored the accompanying book “Pathway to the Cross”, wrote a cookbook “All About Squash”, and even composed a song, “Sandy’s Song”.

She was always on the move, loving life, her family, and friends, enjoying many adventures along the way. More than anything, she loved the Good Lord Jesus Christ.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest at Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington for their support and love during these last few weeks.
