Carl Maynard Obituary

CARL FREEMAN MAYNARD, 84, of Wayne W.Va., closed his eyes on September 9, 2018, and opened them in heaven. He was born October 6, 1933 in Kiahsville, W.Va., a son of Charley and Hester Maynard. He was preceded in death by his brothers Robert and Billy Wayne, and sister Lorraine.

Carl had a lifelong love affair with his wife of almost 61 years, Glenna Janette (Johnson) whom he married on October 6, 1957, which was also her birthday as well. Together they built a home and life full of love, laughter, friendship, and parenthood. He loved her cooking more than any restaurant and always said “thanks for dinner”, even if it was a bologna sandwich. Carl was an incredible craftsman with the talent to fix, design, build, or make anything he needed or wanted. He was an accomplished mechanic, teaching all his children, especially his daughters how to work on their cars, change a light switch, shoot a gun when needed, select a quality hammer, and how to clean that fish you caught for dinner on numerous camping trips. With Glenna by his side, the family traveled the United States extensively, visiting all 48 lower states. He was sweet, loving, and attentive to her along with a little, ok, a lot, of teasing and aggravating just for fun. Along with Glenna they taught their children what a real marriage should be, and not to settle for less. They were taught to stand up for themselves and for others, show empathy and charity, be opinionated, strong women, enjoy life, take a chance, learn something new, be thankful, take pride in your work, and most of all to love God.  Sometimes adding opinion on your clothes as you walked out the door saying, “I hope you didn’t pay good money for that” and then smile.

Carl leaves behind a plethora of machine parts, nuts, bolts, screws, drill bits, and tools, that no one knew what they were used for but him. As well as any size lumber that you want. He loved his Ford cars and trucks. When you come to see him, he will be dressed in his Sunday best, but we all know he would be much more comfortable in jeans and a button up shirt, usually checked, ready to work on something or just piddle in the garage.

Survivors include his wife Glenna, children Carletta (Bob) Fannin, Minetta (Chris) Moore, and Jeffery Carl Maynard; five grand daughters, Amanda (Reg) Greer, Jami Moss (Cory) Sansom, Kelli B. Moore, Cara (Chad) Brown, and Wendy (Bob) Young;  and seven  great-grandchildren, Trey, Alee, Oliver, Timothy, Nicholas, Bailey, and Cadynce.  Also surviving are his brothers Leopold, John C, Paul, Dover, and Arthur, and their spouses; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carl retired from Aristech Chemical, formerly Novamont and was a member of Laurel Freewill Baptist Church where he gave his life to the Lord.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests, in honor of Carl, please do not wear black to his services.

Carl would like to give one last piece of advice, “Check the pressure on your tires, they look a little low.” and “Always kiss your wife goodnight.”
