JAMES ERVIN MATHIS, 84, of Huntington, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born November 23, 1938, in Wayne, W.Va., a son of the late Brad and Maudie Mathis. Also preceding him in death was one son, James D. Mathis; three brothers, Clarence Mathis, Bill Mathis, and Carol Mathis; and two sisters, Delores Saunders, and Betty Miller. James was a member of the Antioch Old Regular Baptist Church in Wayne and retired from Ashland Oil.
He is survived by one daughter, Wendy (Tom) Carter-Hart of Huntington; three sons. Jay (Lori) Mathis of Vanceburg, Ky., Eddie (Anita) Mathis, and Tim (Tawnia) Mathis, all of Prichard, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
Also surviving is one sister, Fanny (Gary) Murray of Huntington; one brother Arthur (Mary Ann) Mathis of Wayne; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends too numerous to mention.
Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Brother Gary Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Mathis Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
