Proverbs 31:31: Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring praise at the city gate.
JANICE “SUE” CANADAY HALE passed away in Huntington, W.Va., on December 25, 2023, after a brief illness, with family by her side. Sue was born May 11, 1946, in Catlettsburg, Ky. She was loved by her family and was also known as, “Mamaw” and “Aunt Sue” to those closest to her. During her lifetime, she attended Ceredo Kenova CK High School then later worked as a cook for Ashland Oil and the Wayne County school system where her culinary skills brought a smile to so many of the young faces she adored.
She was cherished by her loving husband who predeceased her and awaited her with open arms in Heaven, along with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sue turned her life over to Christ many years ago and lived as a devout Christian woman, enjoying time with her church family at Laurel Freewill Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 45 years. One of Sue’s greatest pleasures in life was spending time, laughing, and making memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought so much joy to her life. She was an excellent cook and loved making desserts and candy for her family and friends. Sue enjoyed reading the word of God from her favorite Bible which brought her much peace and comfort.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Sheila Shawn Pratt (Trace); son, Mark Stafford; sister, Tammy Sexton (Cecil); grandchildren, Trever Napier (Adriana) and Shelby Bailey (Matthew); great grandchildren, Alarich Bailey, and Jaelynn Napier; 26 additional grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; stepchildren Connie Sloan, Jerry Hale, Violet Walters, Ricky Hale, and Della Hale; former son-in-law, Eddie Napier; and special cousins, Brenda Kay Wells, Lisa Horn, Keleen Hall, Kim Kelly, and Bryan McKenzie (Jackie).
She is predeceased by her mother Betty Canaday; her husband Harold Edwin Hale; one brother, Steve Canaday; one son, James Stafford; one daughter, Annette Stafford; one grandson, Simeon Peter Napier; one step-grandson, Flem Walters; son-in-law Larry Walters; aunts Linda Cheek and Norma Stafford; as well as her special aunt and uncle, June and Kenneth Fuller, who helped raise her as a child.
Sue’s family offers their greatest thanks to the 4th floor nursing staff at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, who provided exceptional care and comfort during Sue’s illness.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Ministers Danny Roberts and Zach Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Community Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
