Sidney Stephenson Obituary

SIDNEY GLEN STEPHENSON, 91, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Emogene Dolin Hospice House.  He was born October 16, 1933, in Wayne County, a son of the late Sidney Russell Stephenson and Emma Gann.  His wife Lela Stephenson also preceded him in death along with one daughter, Christina White; six brothers, Eugene, Charles, Calvery, Delbert, Lonnie, and Homer Stephenson; two sisters, Irene Adkins and Evelyn McCloud; one son-in-law, John Pellegrini; and brother-in-law Gary Stevenson.  Sidney was a member of Booten Millers Fork United Baptist Church and retired from Transfab with over 30 years of service.  He was veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War.  He also served as past president of Wayne Little League and past president of Steelworkers Union at Transfab.

Survivors include his son Sidney (Joan) Stephenson Huntington, W.Va.; his daughter Julia Pellegrini, also of Huntington; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Adam) Foster of Ashland, Ky., Taylor Stephenson of Huntington, Gianna Pellegrini of Huntington, Michaela White of Wayne, James Matthew White, Margaret White, both of Delbarton, W.Va., and Kate (Tyler) Curtis of Charleston, W.Va.;   and four great grandchildren, Jaxon Foster, Ayden Foster, Indri Speaks, and Micah Curtis.

Also surviving are five sisters, Lillian Hensley of Huntington, Genevieve (Eugene) Adkins of Huntington, Dora (Frank) Stephens of Wayne, Eleanor Napier of Wayne, and Charlotte Baron of Cleveland, Oh.; sisters-in-law Hilda Moore, Irene Joye, and Lona (Delmas) Perry; brothers-in-law Darrel (Joyce) Stevenson, and Shirley (Ernestine) Gilkerson, Jr.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Glen was known by many names, but in later years was most often referred to as Paw Paw.  He had many hobbies throughout life, coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball in Wayne, enjoyed watching the Big Red Machine, attending many games in person.  He liked fishing in Millers Fork and Twelvepole Creeks especially.  He would tell you that he, “was easily hurt,” but on the other hand he was often called a “Tough Old Bird,” surviving cancer and a house fire, both of which should have shortened his life.  He was proud of his military service to the United States Army.  He loved his family and worked hard providing for his family.  He especially loved his wife of 62 years, who he called Lily Mae.  He had many friends and no enemies in life.

Funeral services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Dillon officiating.  Visitation will begin at 4:30. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Saturday December 14, 2024, at the Paine-Stephenson Cemetery with military honors performed by the American Legion Post 177.
